That's not a niche consumer preference anymore — it's a market-wide shift that's showing up in packaging cost structures across the board, compostable mailers included.

Why treating these as one decision, not two, matters

The reason to connect fulfilment location and packaging choice into a single decision rather than two separate settings is that a merchant optimising for one at the expense of the other usually loses on both. Fulfilling from the nearest location but shipping in an oversized, non-recyclable box captures the last-mile carbon savings and then gives most of them back in packaging waste and dimensional weight. Choosing the most sustainable packaging available but still fulfilling every order from one central warehouse regardless of customer location caps how much distance — and emissions — that packaging choice can actually offset.
