Juan Thornhill is a natural ball-hawk safety. He has good ball skills and likes to attack the ball when it is in the air. He is very comfortable playing with his back to the ball and still being able to track it. He is a rangy free safety with the ability to play sideline to sideline. Being a former corner, he can come down and cover at the line with no problem.
Thronhill is a freak athlete. He posted one of the highest RAS scores in combine history alongside with one of the highest verticals as well. His athleticism paired with his high football IQ can make him a scary free safety. He sees route combinations and run alleys very well, and he does not hesitate to attack once he diagnoses the play. He is also a solid tackler in the open field.
He has only played safety for one full year. He does not have a lot of experience on the backend. Thornhill will go through some learning curves. He will have to learn when to gamble and when to play it cautious. His athleticism will help get him through, but he will have to become a true student of the game and of his position so he does not fall too far behind.
Thornhill has to prove he is more than an athlete. At the NFL level, being an athlete will only get him so far. He has to become a safety, and he has to work on perfecting his craft. In that process, he has to fill out his frame. He needs a little bit more size and bulk to fulfill the role that is being expected of safeties in today’s game. He will also have to learn to play in the box.
How He Fits
Juan Thornhill fits the mold perfectly of what Brian Gutekunst did in last year’s draft with the defensive backs. They are all good football players who just so happen to be rare athletes. The Packers moved Tramon Williams to safety last year and there has been talk of wanting to see what Josh Jackson can do at free safety. However, Thornhill is the solution that makes more sense. He is a ball hawking safety that can play all over the field. The Packers have had issues taking the ball away in recent years. Juan Thornhill would help solve that problem instantly. Pettine would highlight his abilities and put him in certain packages to use his skill set. Thornhill could also help with the overhaul of the special teams unit which is much-needed.
