Josh Jones announced on Twitter Sunday that Packers have informed him of his release.

It comes as no surprise, as Jones was asking to be traded back in the spring. He sat out of OTAs and showed that he was obviously upset about playing in Green Bay. With lack of depth at the inside linebacker position, some wondered if Jones could see a number of reps there. I never saw that happening, but Jones did do a fairly good job in Dom Capers “nitro” package.

As it sets right now, the safety position seems stable in Green Bay. Adrian Amos, Darnell Savage and Raven Greene are leading the group and have had a good rotation going on during the preseason. The problem for Jones is that there was nowhere for him to fit in on the team anymore. The defensive backfield is saturated with good talent and I’m not sure where Jones would fit in to that picture.

In his time in Green Bay, Jones racked up 114 tackles, 3 sacks and 1 interception.
