Winning the battle in the trenches is vital on both sides of the ball. The Packers have had one of the best offensive lines in the league over the past 5-6 years, but the injury bug has plagued the unit for a while now, so acquiring some depth can help this offense a lot. In my opinion, cleaning house with those often injured players should be the first step in turning the offense around. The current group’s inability to consistently stop the rush is belied by the fact that the Packers can’t rush themselves.
Meanwhile, on defense, the Achilles heal of the Packers, and the reason they have not been back to the Superbowl, can be attributed to the lack of a Pass Rush. While pass defense involves all 11 defenders doing their job correctly, the poor play of the Defensive backs is evident and measurable by the catches they allow. It’s simple, If they only have to guard their man for 4 seconds and not 9 seconds their play should improve. The Pass rush specifically involves consistent defensive line play and the occasion Safety or Corner-back to Blitz along with the edge rush. The Edge Rush is Key though and the Packers need two or three new ones as well. The current players just can’t get close to a sack especially on 3rd downs. They need to get home. With the Packers new Defensive Coordinator, Mike Pettine, it might be hard to predict the type of player he is looking for. Using his previous stops in the NFL, it was rather consistent that speed at that position is important. The Talent is on protecting the QB and attacking the QB is key, lets find some.
